You’ve developed a good introduction, discussed each main point, and proved each argument in the body paragraphs, now it’s time for the finishing touch – your conclusion. The opening and closing paragraphs of a research paper are the wrapping paper that should get people’s attention. Consider the following guidelines that will help you create an effective conclusion.

  • Focus on the introduction.
  • You determine the main points and the general direction of your paper in the introduction. When you write your thesis statement, you should keep in mind that your aim is to develop it in the body paragraphs and demonstrate the results of your research in the final part. Thus, there should be a logical connection between the beginning and ending.

  • Remind your reader about the topic.
  • Briefly restate your topic and point out its importance in the first sentence. You don’t need to explain why it’s important because it should be evident from the previous paragraphs.

  • Restate your thesis statement.
  • Rewrite your thesis in different words. Don’t just copy that statement; instead, paraphrase it and make it sound coherent with the first sentence.

  • Summarize the paper’s main points.
  • To give a brief account of the main points, go back to the topic sentences of each body paragraph. They should not be repeated in the same words as in the body of your paper. Think about how to pull together your key ideas and the supporting details you provided for them in a concise and clear way. Also note, that you should more synthesize than summarize.

  • Avoid certain phrases.
  • Cliché phrases such as “in conclusion” or “in summary” should be avoided. They are more typical of speeches, but not in written papers. Moreover, the structure and content should prompt your audience that they are reading the closing part, even if you omit those lead-in phrases.

  • Don’t add any new information.
  • Remember that the body of your paper should introduce new concepts, provide evidence, and explain each idea. The closing paragraph should only summarize what has already been said. It’s your chance to demonstrate that you covered all main points and to give your readers a feeling of completeness.

  • Employ different strategies.
  • There are some tricks to make your conclusion effective and meaningful. One of them is asking, “So what?” while writing your statements. This way, you’ll have to explain to yourself why something is important or why something matters. By doing this you’ll make sure you are giving substantial information.
